The Standing Committee of Parliament on Road Transport, Tourism and Culture met on Monday and asked police officials from Haryana and Uttar Pradesh to share their plans to decongest highways connecting the national capital.
According to sources, officials including the NHAI Chairman, Secretary of the Ministry of Road Transport, and senior police officers from Haryana and Uttar Pradesh attended the meeting.
Committee members raised concerns about persistent traffic congestion and jams on highways linking Delhi to both states. A Congress MP also flagged issues like illegal parking and roadside dhabas, which contribute to the problem. He further noted the illegal cuts made by dhaba owners and others for parking, which worsen the traffic situation.
The committee highlighted that even minor vehicle breakdowns cause significant jams and demanded effective strategies to manage such incidents. Police officials, including the Gurugram Police Commissioner and senior officers from UP districts bordering Delhi, shared feedback with the committee.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is expected to submit a written response soon.
