Leader of Opposotion in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, who has been staying with his mother for more than last two years has started the process to shift in his new residence 5 Sunehri Bagh road, a day before his 55th birthday.

According to sources, the Congress leader will fully shift at the new address before the commencement of Parliament’s Monsoon Session which is set to begin on July 21. The bungalow was earlier allotted to former Union Minister A Narayanaswamy.

A source said that the process of moving his belongings and other items was started on June 18.

The source said that the process started after Rahul Gandhi returned from his foreign visit. On June 19, Rahul Gandhi on the eve of his birthday first went to Sir Gangaram Hospital to get his mother Sonia Gandhi, who is also Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson discharged. She aas admitted at the hospital since June 15 evening.

After returning from the hospital, Rahul Gandhi also met party workers at the old party headquarters here.

The Lok Sabha Housing Secretarait had allotted 5 Sunehri Bagh Road residence, a type 8 bungalow to Rahul Gandhi in July last year.

The source also said that since the day this 5 Sunehri Bagh Bunglow was allotted to Rahul Gandhi, the work of renovation was started and after detailed discussion Rahul Gandhi created a private space like 12 Tughlaq Lane.

While commenting on taking almost a year time to officially shift to his new residence, the source said that he has created the space with very minute detail and passionately and thus it took a year time.

He even said that even his sister and party’s General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also had overseen the work of the new bungalow.

The source, however, said that it is yet to be decided that if the important meetings will happen at 5 Sunehri Bagh or will go in routine at 10 Janpath and Indira Bhawan.

Rahul Gandhi was earlier staying at 12 Tughlaq Lane since he won his first elections in 2004 from Uttar Pradesh’s Amethi. He had shifted to 13 Tughlaq Lane in 2005 and stayed there till Aprill 22, 2023.

He had to vacate the same bungalow after his disqualification as Member of Parliament by a Gujarat sessions court in March 2023.

He was disqualified as MP after he was convicted by a court in Gujarat’s Surat and sentenced to two years in prison in a 2019 defamation case for asking at an election rally whether people with the “Modi surname” were “thieves”.

In April 2023, Rahul Gandhi vacated the residence and shifted with his mother at 10 Janpath in the national capital.

While speaking to the media after submitting the keys with the officials, he had said: “People of India gave me this house for 19 years, I want to thank them. It’s the price for speaking the truth. I am ready to pay any price for speaking the truth….”

The former Wayanad MP had said that he would live at 10 Janpath, until he makes other arrangements.

However, after 137 days, the Supreme Court in August 2023 restored Gandhi scion’s membership as a parliamentarian and stayed his conviction in the case.
