The Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) marked World Cancer Day on February 4, 2025, with a significant event at the APJ Abdul Kalam Auditorium. The program brought together esteemed guests, including D.S. Negi, IAS (Retd), CEO of Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute, Delhi, who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Among the Guests of Honor were Dr. Ajit Kumar, IAS (Retd), Founder Chairman of Earth Care Foundation; Shri Sumit Antil, Indian Javelin Thrower; and Shri Yogesh Kathuniya, Indian Paralympic Athlete.
The event focused on raising awareness about cancer, its prevention, early detection, and treatment. A highlight of the program was the presence of cancer survivors from ILBS, whose inspiring stories of resilience underscored the human spirit’s strength in the fight against cancer.
In his welcome address, Dr. S.K. Sarin, Director, ILBS, reaffirmed the institute’s commitment to comprehensive cancer care. He emphasized ILBS’s holistic approach, integrating advanced medical treatment with emotional and psychological support. “World Cancer Day reminds us of our dedication to this cause,” he stated.
Delivering his speech, D.S. Negi stressed the importance of making cancer care both accessible and affordable. “Timely intervention can save lives. It is imperative that quality treatment reaches people from all socio-economic backgrounds,” he emphasized.
Dr. Ajit Kumar highlighted the role of environmental factors in cancer prevention, advocating for sustainable practices and increased awareness of pollution’s impact on public health. As a cancer survivor himself, he also spoke about the power of a positive mindset in overcoming the disease.
Both Sumit Antil and Yogesh Kathuniya shared their personal journeys in sports, drawing parallels between athletic resilience and the strength required to battle it. “Challenges are inevitable, but our response to them defines us,” said Shri Antil. Shri Kathuniya added, “Just as in sports, fighting cancer requires unwavering determination and a positive outlook.” Their words served as a powerful source of motivation for all attendees.
The event also included expert sessions on cancer care and treatment. Dr. Vineet Talwar, Director of Medical Oncology at Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute, delivered an insightful lecture on recent advancements in its treatment. Dr. Sushma Bhatnagar led a discussion on the psychological and social aspects of cancer care, while Dr. Hanuman Prasad provided an overview of ILBS’s radiation oncology services.
A particularly moving session featured its survivors from ILBS sharing their experiences, moderated by Dr. Puja Sahai and Dr. Deepti Sharma. Their heartfelt stories of struggle and triumph offered hope and inspiration to many.
The World Cancer Day event at ILBS served as a powerful testament to the collective effort required to fight cancer and support those affected by it.
