Takhat Sri Harimandir Ji declared Sukhbir Singh Badal ‘Tankhaiya’ for defying religious directives.

Chandigarh: In a significant religious pronouncement, the Five Singh Sahiban (Panj Pyare) of Takhat Sri Harimandir Ji Patna Sahib, have declared Badal a Tankhaiya, citing gross indiscipline and repeated defiance of Takhat directives.

According to the official order issued by the Takhat authorities, Badal was served multiple summons between June 28 and July 2, 2025, directing him to appear before the Takhat and submit his explanation regarding serious allegations. However, he failed to appear or respond on all occasions.

The issue was first raised on May 21, 2025, when Takhat representatives Kuldeep Singh Gargaj and Teja Singh submitted a written report to the Singh Sahiban expressing concern over Badal’s conduct. After repeated efforts to seek clarification, his continued silence and absence were deemed contempt of the authority of the Takhat.

In their meeting on July 5, 2025, the Panj Pyare Sahiban unanimously resolved to declare Badal a Tankhaiya. This status, in Sikh tradition, signifies a person who has violated the religious code of conduct and is liable to appear before the Panj Pyare for possible punishment and public apology.

The resolution was formally signed and issued on July 4, 2025, by all Panj Pyare, who represent the collective spiritual authority of the Takhat.

This decision is a serious religious reprimand and underscores the importance the Takhat places on discipline, obedience to maryada, and respect for Sikh institutions. The Singh Sahiban have appealed to the Sangat to cooperate in maintaining the sanctity of Takhat Sri Harimandir Ji Patna Sahib — one of Sikhism’s five highest seats of authority.

Earlier, Badal was declared Tankhaiya by Akal Takht Amritsar in cases of beadbi (sacrilege).
